Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak claimed career best Twenty20 figures of 4-16 but it wasn’t enough to prevent South Africa winning by 12 runs in Johannesburg.
After South Africa made 118-7, the Bangladeshis were set 122 to win courtesy of a Duckworth-Lewis recalculation after a lightning storm.
They managed a spirited 109-8 from their 14 overs as skipper Mohammad Ashraful contributed an enterprising 21 from just ten balls. Dale Steyn and stand-in captain Johan Botha each claimed two wickets to limit the tourists’ run chase, which began with a positive stand of 25 in 3.1 overs between Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique.
Razzak, the only Bangladesh player with an Indian Premier League contract (with Bangalore outfit the Royal Challengers), built on his recent good form at home against New Zealand by claiming his 4-16 from three overs.
He dismissed Loots Bosman, Justin Ontong (both caught), bowled top-scorer AB de Villiers for 36 and also bowled Botha. Razzak’s fellow in-form left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan claimed 2-21.
The first of three one-day internationals between the teams start in Potchefstroom on Friday with others in Benoni and East London.
