Bangladesh posted a rare victory in international cricket against a major nation as they beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the first one-day international at Mirpur.

Fast bowler Mushtafe Mortaza claimed 4-44 and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak took 3-33 to help limit the Black Caps to 201-9 in their 50 overs.

The Bangladeshis then reached 202-3 with 27 balls remaining, as skipper Mohammad Ashraful scored 60 not out from just 56 balls after opener Junaid Siddique laid the foundations with a solid 85 from 139 balls.

New Zealand, who won a one-day series 3-1 in England in June, made a good start after losing the toss and lost their first wicket with 47 runs on the scoreboard, but thereafter they crashed to 79-6 as Jamie How, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris and Daniel Flynn all fell for single figures scores.

New Zealand’s’s misery could have been so much worse had number seven Jacob Oram (50) and skipper Daniel Vettori (30) not put on 70 for the seventh wicket.

It was Bangladesh’s first win against a non-minnow team since beating South Africa at the 2007 World Cup in Guyana 18 months ago. They had lost their previous 14 matches against elite Test teams.

The second match in the three-game series is again at Mirpur on Saturday. The third clash is at Chittagong on Tuesday.
